The mountains are calling…

… and I must go! So Friday we left Yellowstone and headed to Whitefish MT and Glacier National Park. Wasn’t too far of a drive - about 400 miles - but was reminiscent of a road trip from when I was a kid. We stopped at gas stations for drinks and snacks, and at roadside attractions to snap a picture…. Had a pork chop sandwich in Butte, and there saw a monument to the miners who have lost their lives in mining accidents (quite moving). Once we got to Whitefish, we took a boat ride in Glacier on Lake McDonald, ate dinner at the lodge on the lake, drove a piece of the Going To The Sun Road (most of it closed due to snow), watched some beautiful sunsets over the water, drove through neighborhoods and ski resorts and golf courses just taking in the local sights (which included LOTS of deer and even a family of foxes). We love exploring like that and getting a feel for the communities we visit.
And I must say, the scenery from Yellowstone to Glacier was so pretty…. Montana is a beautiful state! The mountains and streams and meadows combine to make a canvas better than that of the finest paintings the world has seen. But it’s funny because I took pictures here and there, but not nearly as many as I normally do. I am more enjoying just being in nature and seeing it through my own two lenses, and not that of a camera. John Muir said, “Wherever we go in the mountains, or indeed in any of God’s wild fields, we find more than we seek.” And that has been true for me on this vacation. I was seeking the perfect picture & some time away. What I found were memories made with my parents and my husband that were best captured in my mind’s eye. The pictures of course are valuable, because they bring back the memories and invoke the feelings. But the time together has been invaluable and I’m so thankful for my family, and for the ability to travel and explore this beautiful country. Because God has truly blessed America….
