Minivans and Large Cars

A couple weeks ago we vacationed in a new spot: Galveston, TX. I’ll be honest - I didn’t have a burning desire to go there. But my mother-in-law did, so we planned a trip. And what a great time we had! We flew into Houston and rented a minivan (I would never OWN a minivan but love them when we’re traveling because of the great visibility and all the room). Thankfully it was warm in Galveston but not TOO hot because the A/C didn’t work in said minivan! I tried and tried to get Enterprise to replace it but was not successful (don’t know that I would rent from them again). The house we rented, however, was perfect…. on the water, had a pool AND functioning A/C! Our weather was mostly sunny while we were there. Had one rain and thunder storm which was fun to watch from the covered porch. While we were there, we toured a couple mansions, visited the Pleasure Pier (minds outta the gutter - it’s an amusement park), did some shopping, visited a naval museum, checked out the beach and warm water, and visited several restaurants. Our first dining experience was The Tipsy Turtle. Location right on the beach was awesome! Food was so so and the service was not great because they were sooooo busy. But it was a fun spot none-the-less. Oh and add to the list the urgent care we visited for a scratched eyeball, and even that was an OK experience as they got us in and out pretty quick. And the pharmacist was able to give us a recommendation for a great local breakfast spot we went to a couple times (Shy Katz - the breakfast tostadas were awesome). A couple highlights for me: the tour of the Bishop’s Palace and the chapel filled with beautiful stained glass, and the naval museum and getting to walk through a submarine. Never done that before. Man, those are some tight quarters!! Hats off to ALL who serve our country, and especially those aboard subs.
After 6 days in Galveston we flew to Reno for a truck show (big rigs, AKA “large cars”). Weather there was OK… a little sun, a few clouds, a little rain. Stayed at The Grand Sierra Resort which is also where the show was. Being that this was a national show, there were so many nice rigs to look at! My favorite was an ‘85 white and gold Peterbilt 359. I saw the same truck last year at a show in CA and fell in love with it then. Got to chat with the owners a couple times - super nice couple here in CA. Another favorite of mine is a cool Peterbilt motorhome that our friends own, complete with a full size couch and waterbed! I spent some time inside there cooling off cuz when the sun came out, it was pretty warm. I really enjoy these truck shows and am already looking forward to the next one. Good thing I’m married to a trucker!!
After the show, and after losing all my allotted money in the casino (haha) we flew home to San Diego, back to the gloom and drizzle that seems to have become the norm here. That and gas that costs twice as much as anywhere we travel. LOL maybe not TWICE as much, but considerably more for sure! And now it’s back to work. Some may dread that part of vacationing, but I am thankful to have a job I love and where I get paid vacation time so I can to go explore and have fun, be it in a mini van or a large car! ❤️
